A diamond is forever, but it still needs a little care to keep its sparkle. Diamonds attract oils and grime, which dull their brilliance over time. The good news: four simple habits keep your ring looking brand new.
Clean it gently
Soak the ring in warm water with a drop of mild dish soap for a few minutes, brush it softly with a clean, soft toothbrush (getting behind the diamond, where film builds up), rinse, and pat dry with a lint-free cloth. Doing this once or twice a month keeps it sparkling. Avoid harsh chemicals and abrasive cleaners.
Take it off at the right times
Remove your ring for the gym, heavy cleaning, gardening, swimming, and applying lotions or sunscreen. Hard knocks can chip even a diamond's edges, and chlorine and chemicals can damage the metal and loosen the setting over time.
Check the prongs
Once a year, have a jeweler inspect the setting and prongs. Prongs can wear down or loosen with daily wear, and a quick check is the best insurance against a lost stone. If a prong ever snags on fabric, get it looked at sooner.
Store it safely
When you're not wearing it, keep your ring in a soft pouch or a lined box, separate from other jewelry — a diamond is hard enough to scratch your other pieces (and their metal can scratch the band). A consistent "home" for your ring also means you'll never misplace it.
