Planning a surprise proposal and don't know her ring size? You're not alone — and you don't need to ruin the surprise to get it right. Here's how to find her ring size discreetly, and what to do if you're still unsure.
Start with the average
Most women wear between a US size 5 and 7, with 6 to 6.5 being the most common. If you have no other information, a 6 or 6.5 is a sensible, safe guess — and an easy one to adjust later. Our ring size guide has a printable chart if you want to measure precisely.
Borrow a ring she already wears
The most reliable trick: quietly borrow a ring she wears on her ring finger (the fourth finger of either hand — sizes differ between fingers). Take it to a jeweler to measure, or trace the inside circle on paper and measure the diameter. Even slipping the ring onto your own finger and marking where it sits gives a jeweler something to work from.
Measure at the right time
Fingers swell during the day and in heat, and shrink when cold. For the truest fit, measure when hands are warm and at the end of the day. Also note: wider bands fit more snugly, so size up slightly for a wide or eternity-style band.
If you're still unsure
Don't stress — it's better to propose with a ring that's slightly loose than one that won't go on. Resizing is simple and common, and you can always propose with the ring, then have it sized perfectly afterward. Ask her friends or family discreetly if you need a tie-breaker.
At Tessera, every ring is made to order, so we'll help you choose a size and sort out any adjustment. Find the setting you'll propose with, and read how the whole process works.
