Do Lab-Grown Diamonds Have Resale Value?

It's a fair thing to ask before spending thousands: if I ever needed to sell, what would a lab-grown diamond be worth? The honest answer isn't the one either side of the industry usually gives you. Here's the straight version.

The honest truth: diamonds aren't investments

This is true of all diamonds — lab-grown and natural alike. A diamond is a retail product with a retail markup, which means the moment you buy it, its resale value is a fraction of what you paid — often 25–50% of retail, sometimes less. This isn't unique to lab-grown; a natural diamond loses most of its "value" the instant it leaves the store too. Anyone selling you a diamond as a financial investment isn't being straight with you.

So what about lab-grown specifically?

Because lab-grown diamonds cost far less up front — typically 60–80% less than natural — the dollar amount you'd "lose" on resale is smaller too; you simply have less tied up in the stone. Their resale market is younger and prices have softened as production scaled, so don't expect to recover much. But you also didn't overpay to begin with.

A better way to think about it

Buy a diamond for what it is — a symbol you intend to keep and wear for a lifetime — not as an asset you plan to flip. On that measure, lab-grown is arguably the smarter choice: the same real diamond, the same beauty and durability, for a fraction of the price, with far less money locked up in something you were never planning to sell anyway.

If you ever do need to sell

Your independent grading report is what makes any resale possible — it's objective proof of what the stone is. Keep it safe. Whether lab-grown or natural, a certified diamond with its GIA or IGI report is far easier to resell than an uncertified one. Every diamond we ship includes that report.

Common questions

Do lab-grown diamonds hold their value?

Not well — but neither do natural diamonds. Both lose most of their retail value immediately. Buy for love and longevity, not resale.

Can I insure a lab-grown diamond?

Yes — it's appraised and insured using the same grading report as a natural diamond.
