Lab-Grown vs Natural Diamonds: An Honest Comparison

It's the first real fork in the road for most people shopping for an engagement ring: lab-grown or natural? The marketing on both sides is loud, and most of it is designed to push you one way. Here is the honest version — what's actually the same, what's genuinely different, and how to decide without overthinking it.

The part nobody disputes: they're the same material

A lab-grown diamond is a real diamond. It is not a simulant, not cubic zirconia, not "fake." Chemically, it is pure crystallized carbon — atom for atom identical to a diamond pulled out of the earth. Optically and physically they are the same too: the same hardness (10 on the Mohs scale), the same refractive index, the same sparkle. A trained gemologist cannot tell them apart by eye; it takes specialized equipment to distinguish the two.

Both are graded on the exact same standard — the 4Cs — by the same independent laboratories. Every diamond we list, lab-grown or natural, comes with a GIA or IGI grading report, so the quality is verified the same way regardless of origin.

The one real difference: how they're made

The only meaningful difference between the two is origin — and time.

  • Natural diamonds formed one to three billion years ago, deep in the earth, under extreme heat and pressure, then were carried toward the surface by ancient volcanic activity.
  • Lab-grown diamonds are created in a matter of weeks in advanced facilities that reproduce those same conditions — either through High Pressure High Temperature (HPHT) or Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD).

That's the whole story. Same crystal, different birthplace. Everything else — the price gap, the resale conversation, the "which is better" debate — flows from that single fact.

The price difference (and why it exists)

At an identical cut, color, clarity, and carat, a lab-grown diamond typically costs 60–80% less than a natural one. That is not a quality discount — the stones look and grade the same. It reflects supply: lab-grown diamonds can be produced to meet demand, while natural diamonds of a given grade are finite.

In practice, this is the single biggest lever you have over your budget. Choosing lab-grown often means a noticeably larger or higher-graded center stone for the same spend — or the same stone for far less, freeing up budget for the setting. What about resale and value?

Here's the honest answer most retailers avoid: diamonds of any origin are poor investments. Both natural and lab-grown stones sell at retail for far more than you'd recover reselling them — that's true of almost all jewelry. If "holding value" is your goal, a diamond isn't the vehicle.

Natural diamonds do retain a somewhat higher resale percentage today, largely because the lab-grown market is newer and prices have been falling. But for the overwhelming majority of buyers — people buying a ring to wear and keep, not to flip — this difference is academic. Buy the stone you love at a price that feels right, and plan to keep it.

So which should you choose?

Will a jeweler be able to tell it's lab-grown?

Not by eye. Distinguishing lab-grown from natural requires specialized equipment, and lab-grown stones are laser-inscribed with their report number so the origin is always documented — never hidden.

Do lab-grown diamonds test as real diamonds?

Yes. Because they are real diamonds, they pass a standard diamond tester. Only advanced lab equipment can identify the growth origin.
