When you start shopping for a diamond, you'll hear about the 4Cs — cut, color, clarity, and carat. They're the four qualities that determine how a diamond looks and what it costs. But they aren't equally important, and knowing where to spend (and where to save) is the difference between a dull stone and one that sparkles from across the room. Here's how the 4Cs really work.
Cut: the most important C
Cut is the one that matters most — and it's not about the diamond's shape. Cut describes how well a diamond's facets are proportioned and polished, which controls how it returns light as brilliance (white sparkle) and fire (flashes of color). A well-cut diamond looks alive; a poorly cut one looks flat, even when its other grades are high. Spend here first: an Excellent or Ideal cut will out-sparkle a larger, poorly cut stone every time.
Color: less is more
Diamond color is graded from D (completely colorless) to Z (light yellow or brown). The catch: in the near-colorless range of G to J, the difference is almost impossible to see face-up, especially once a diamond is set in a ring. Choosing a G–J color instead of D–F gives you the same white look for noticeably less. If you're setting in yellow or rose gold, you can go even warmer, since the metal masks subtle color.
Clarity: eye-clean is what counts
Clarity measures the tiny natural inclusions inside a diamond, graded from Flawless down to Included. What actually matters is whether a diamond is eye-clean — free of inclusions visible to the naked eye. Many VS1, VS2, and even SI1 diamonds are perfectly eye-clean, so paying for a Flawless grade you can only appreciate under magnification is rarely worth it.
Carat: weight, not size
Carat is a measure of weight, not size. Two diamonds of the same carat can look different depending on their cut and shape — an elongated oval can look larger than a round of equal weight. Prices also jump at the round milestones (1.00ct, 2.00ct), so choosing a diamond just under a milestone — like 0.90ct or 1.90ct — can save a meaningful amount for a size difference no one will notice.
Where to spend your budget
If you remember one thing: prioritize cut, then choose an eye-clean clarity and a near-colorless color, and let carat be the flexible variable. That order gets you the most beautiful diamond for your money. For a deeper look at pricing, read how much to spend on a diamond.
Every Tessera diamond is independently certified
Every diamond we offer — lab-grown or natural — comes with an independent grading report from GIA or IGI, so the 4Cs you're paying for are verified by a third party, not by us. You see the full grade and final price before you commit, and you can read exactly what we accept and reject. Browse our engagement ring settings and add the diamond that's right for you.
